SESSION 1 :: December 4th :: 5:30-8pm
How the Breath Works – Mechanisms of Breathing:
This workshop focuses on understanding how the breath works in the body. We can easily take the breath for granted, but how does it work exactly? We explore the musculature of breathing to gain a better understanding of how air is moved in and out of the body. We also explore gas exchange and what this means for breath practices.

SESSION 2 :: December 5th :: 9:30am-12pm
Breath and Movement – Integrating the Breath into Posture Practice:
Breath and Movement – Integrating the Breath into Posture Practice: This workshop focuses on incorporating the breath into physical practices. Many modalities focus on the breath- both yoga and beyond- but in order to do that we need to know how the breathing apparatus interacts with the muscular system of the body. We will work on combining breathing and movement; how they can work together harmoniously, and how we can avoid the downfalls or challenges of incorporating the breath within movement practices.

SESSION 3 :: December 5th :: 2-4:30pm
Breath and the Heart – Coherent Breathing and the Nervous System:
Breath and the Heart – Coherent Breathing and the Nervous System: This workshop explores “resonance” and “coherence” which is when the breath synchronizes with the nervous system. This phenomenon affects the heart rate and blood pressure and can help to restore healthy parasympathetic nervous system function. This has profound effects on the mind, mood and mental states. We will explore how to breathe effectively in this way and explore the effects of the practice.

SESSION 4 :: December 6th :: 9:30am-12pm
Slowing the Breath – Yogic Understandings of Breathing:
Slowing the Breath – Yogic Understandings of Breathing: Breath is central to traditions of yogic practice, but what does that mean? This workshop discusses how the yogis of both ancient and modern times have understood the practices of slowing and stopping the breath. Why do it? What does it do for the mind and our understanding of the self? This becomes a philosophical discussion, one that the yogis have been having for centuries.

SESSION 5 :: December 6th :: 2-4:30pm
Breath Beyond the Mat – Developing a Personal Practice:
Breath Beyond the Mat – Developing a Personal Practice: The final workshop of the series integrates the weekend and asks, what’s next? Here we talk about how to tailor a breath practice to fit personal goals or interests. What is the best practice for me? How should I breathe on a regular basis? This workshop answers these questions and provides the tools to begin on a lifelong exploration of the breath.
